How to Get an Australian Student Visa in Nigeria: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you a Nigerian student dreaming of studying in Australia? Navigating the Australian student visa application process is challenging, but with the right information, you can confidently take each step. Whether you’re just starting your application or you’re unsure about certain requirements, this guide will help you understand everything you need to know about securing an Australian Student Visa (subclass 500). We’ve included locally relevant insights to ensure your process is as smooth as possible.

Why study in Australia?

Australia is a popular destination for African students, including those from Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda seeking quality education and career growth. The country offers a vibrant student life, world-class universities, and opportunities for personal and professional development. Currently, there are over 9,000 African students in Australia. To study in Australia, you need the Australian student visa also known as Subclass 500.

What is an Australian Student Visa (subclass 500)?

The Australian Student Visa (subclass 500) allows Nigerian students to study full-time in Australia at a registered institution. This visa grants you the right to work part-time (up to 40 hours per fortnight during study periods, and full-time during breaks), which can help you cover some of your living expenses while studying. Students studying for master’s research or doctoral degrees, and their families, have no work limit.

Requirements for an Australia student visa

To apply for an Australian Student Visa, you need to meet the following basic requirements:

1. Confirmed Enrollment in a CRICOS-Registered Course

Make sure the course you’ve chosen is registered with CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).

2. Proof of Funds

You need to show that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs to and from Australia. This may include bank statements, evidence of a scholarship, or a financial guarantee from a sponsor.

3. Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

You must demonstrate that you are genuinely intending to study in Australia and return to Nigeria after your studies. This is assessed based on the GS statement, which requires you to provide evidence of your ties to Nigeria and why you chose to study in Australia.

4. Health and Character Requirements

You’ll need to meet health and character requirements by undergoing a medical examination and providing police clearance if required.

5. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

All international students in Australia must have health insurance. The OSHC will help you with the cost of medical care while in Australia.
